The main Hermes Agent alternatives are ShiftHands, OpenClaw, Squad.so, Manus and Lindy. OpenClaw is the closest open-source, self-hosted option. Squad.so, Manus and Lindy run agents as hosted services. ShiftHands runs agents by project on your own Mac, and you supervise them from a browser or phone. This guide covers Hermes Agent, the open-source agent from Nous Research.
Engine disclosure: ShiftHands uses open-source Hermes Agent software by Nous Research under the MIT License. ShiftHands is a separate product that provides its own Mac app, project-based workspace and browser/phone interface. ShiftHands is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nous Research.
See it working
Click through the real app: projects down the side, a chat per agent, automations that report back, and a browser you can take over. The agents do the typing.
Recorded in the ShiftHands demo workspace.
Virtual Environment
Every ShiftHands plan, Free included, comes with the Virtual Environment: a 3D office in the app where your agents work at their desks, grouped by project. Walk over, pull up a chair, and watch your crew get it done.

Sit down to see every project and every agent at a glance, and chat with anyone without leaving your chair.
Every agent has a desk in its project area. Agents running an automation head to the Automations room. Walk up to any agent and chat.
Rendered in the ShiftHands demo workspace with made-up names. Open the Virtual Environment from the sidebar or from Chief of Staff in the app. Agents still run on your Mac and use your connected AI accounts.
The product you are replacing
Hermes Agent calls itself "the self-improving AI agent". It creates skills from experience, keeps memory across sessions and runs from a terminal, a desktop app or the chat apps you already use.

None of these is a one-for-one copy of Hermes Agent. Each is listed for a different buying scenario, with its main trade-off. The list is not an overall ranking; ShiftHands is our product.
ShiftHands uses Hermes Agent technology within its own Mac-based project workspace, rather than providing the standalone Hermes Agent experience. Each agent has its own chat, history and model.
Trade-off Apple-silicon Macs only, and the Mac must stay on with ShiftHands open. You supervise agents through the Mac app and a browser, not chat apps. Gemini and Grok sign-ins are not available yet.

An open-source gateway that connects chat apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Signal and iMessage to AI agents running on your own hardware.
Trade-off You install, configure and maintain it yourself, and model costs are separate.

A managed service that gives you named AI teammates with roles, a shared cloud computer and connections to your business tools.
Trade-off A monthly fee on top of your AI plan, and the work runs on Squad's cloud computer, not yours.

A general AI agent that plans and finishes tasks in its own sandboxed virtual computer, from research to slides and websites.

ShiftHands fits when you want a packaged Mac workspace around your agents, rather than managing a standalone Hermes installation yourself.

Hermes Agent
Hermes Agent may be the better fit if you want to control the open-source agent runtime directly. It supports deployment across local machines, containers and remote infrastructure, with a CLI, desktop app, messaging gateway, model-provider options and configurable security controls.
Stay with Hermes Agent if you rely on its self-improving memory and skills system, messaging-platform access, specialist bots, custom integrations or infrastructure flexibility. ShiftHands is not a one-for-one replacement for those capabilities, even though it incorporates Hermes Agent software.
Your own hardware (Hermes Agent, OpenClaw, ShiftHands) or a vendor's cloud (Squad.so, Manus, Lindy). A web dashboard does not always mean the agent runs in the cloud. If your main requirement is supervising coding agents in a desktop workspace, our BridgeMind alternatives guide covers a more focused set of tools.
Hermes Agent and OpenClaw offer direct control of their agent infrastructure. ShiftHands provides a Mac workspace without requiring you to configure a standalone Hermes gateway. Squad.so and Lindy provide hosted workflows through connected apps; Manus offers cloud execution and an optional desktop app for working with local files and tools.
Hermes Agent writes and improves its own skills. Lindy keeps memory in files you can edit. Check how each tool stores what it learns.
Hermes Agent and OpenClaw reach you in chat apps. ShiftHands works through a browser on any device. Lindy works in Slack, email and iMessage.
All six can run scheduled work. Compare which actions need your approval and whether you can answer from a phone.
Add the app fee, model or provider costs, credits and any server you run. Free software does not mean free model usage.
Yes. Hermes Agent is free, open-source software under the MIT License. You still pay for the AI models you use and any server you run it on. Nous Portal is an optional paid subscription for model access.
Yes. ShiftHands uses open-source Hermes Agent software by Nous Research under the MIT License, inside its own Mac app and project workspace. ShiftHands is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nous Research, and it does not expose every Hermes Agent feature.
Yes. Hermes Agent can run on your own computer: Hermes Desktop installs on Apple-silicon Macs and Windows, and the command-line version runs on Linux and WSL2. A server or container is optional.
Yes. Hermes Desktop installs the command-line and desktop applications on Apple-silicon Macs and Windows 10 or 11.
ShiftHands works from any phone browser. OpenClaw has iOS and Android nodes and works through chat apps. Squad.so has a web dashboard, and Manus and Lindy have mobile or messaging access. Hermes Agent itself is reachable from chat apps on your phone.
You get a Mac app with agents organised by project and a browser interface for supervising them. You give up direct control of the runtime, the messaging gateway and options ShiftHands does not expose, and you need an Apple-silicon Mac that stays on.
